As many readers already know, some of the projects we are most excited about and proud of at Greener Village are our greenhouses and gardens. By having these facilities we are able harvest fresh produce for our food hampers, give clients the chance to grow their own food, and provide a common gathering place for our community. It’s certainly a labor of love to keep these initiatives going. It takes a lot of people power to plant, weed, water and harvest. Sometimes a little extra help is needed.

That’s where our feathered friends come in. By attracting native bird species to our property, we can reduce the impact of insect pests on our gardens without resorting to harsh chemical pesticides. The volunteers at Greener Village have been hard at work constructing nesting boxes and feeders to make this happen.

Here a feeder is being stained so it can stand up to whatever weather comes our way.

Not only that, but the sights and sounds of our flighty companions is a proven stress reliever and overall delight for our volunteers, clients and visitors.

These nesting boxes will be suspended around our gardens on steel poles. We poured concrete in the milk jugs to make a stable base for the poles and keep them from tipping over.
