Bring on the Butterflies!

One of the projects we are most excited about this spring is the reopening of our butterfly house and planting of the butterfly garden. Just what do butterflies have to do with our community food centre? Well, I’m glad you asked! Some butterflies are excellent pollinators. Having them around the garden means our plants will produce healthy seeds that can be used next year.

There is one butterfly that can even help with pests. The harvester butterfly (the only carnivorous butterfly in North America) feeds almost exclusively on trouble-making aphids.

There are a few butterflies that are less than helpful, though. The Cabbage White is an introduced species that can cause havoc with certain vegetables. It’s caterpillars just love to eat up broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and brussel sprouts. Luckily, there are ways to deal with these vile vegetarians that won’t harm other butterflies. Usually protecting vegetables with simple barriers will do the trick!

We look forward to posting more updates on these projects in the coming weeks!
